Certamen, the Latin equivalent of Jeopardy, is a fun and competitive game which challenges students in a variety of intellectual ways. During this one week camp, students will study the Latin language, along with the history, culture, and mythology of ancient Greece and Rome in order to compete against each other. COLLEGE ESSAY
High School Students

The most time-consuming, frustrating, and irritating part of any college application is the essay. This one-week course is designed to help students (upcoming seniors and juniors primarily) generate ideas and practice their prose skills in preparation for executing dynamic essays to enhance their college applications. Students will become familiar with a wide range of essay questions from a number of colleges and receive feedback on at least three practice essays during the week. Register by 4/15 for $180; or after 4/15 for $195.
CREATIVE WRITING WORKSHOP

This workshop is designed for students who have already mastered basic grammar and are ready to develop their personal style. Students will analyze published models for inspiration as well as experiment with autobiographical, fictional, and poetic forms. ETYMOLOGY AND WORD ROOTS

This course will introduce students to English words which are derived from Latin and Greek. 97% of all words over two syllables are derived from Latin and Greek. This comprises an overwhelming majority of words which appear on the SAT and other achievement tests. The class will focus on the derivation and meaning of these words. Fun games and activities will be provided to help the campers learn in a fun way! Finally, the week will conclude with a spelling bee to which parents, family, and friends are invited to see who can best apply what they have learned! The session will focus on instilling reading strategies and techniques that will assist even the most reluctant reader. READY, SET, MIDDLE SCHOOL

The week long summer camp is designed for rising 6th grade students new to our middle school. Activities are designed to help the student feel confident and excited about entering into middle school. This camp will provide students with strategies for success in middle school. Study skills, organizational tips, dress code, school rules, even how to open lockers between classes will all be covered! Each day is designed to be fun as well as informative for new students. We will even take a field trip to the downtown library and participate in a library scavenger hunt! Materials needed: 2-3 ring binders, paper, and plastic dividers with pockets. Courtney Cardman, a 2nd grade teacher at Oak Hall who is trained in Singapore Math, will be tutoring 1st -4th grade this summer. She will be offering a “preview” for new students entering OHLS as well as additional support for returning students as they get ready for the upcoming school year. Singapore Math is the name given to the math curriculum developed in the country of Singapore and now used in many schools and districts across the U.S. It is part of the K-3rd grade math curriculum and will include 4th grade in the fall 2010. Mrs. Cardman will also be tutoring students in our Shurley English program. This language arts program gives students a solid foundation in grammar, writing and speaking. Program Cost is $195.00 per week.
