'No Rum Or Cigars:: Contemporary Cuban Art from the Wally and Michele Bird Collection
Supporting Angel by Kdir Lopez

This collection of Cuban work reflects the experiences of two Americans who lived in Cuba from May 2004 through the fall of 2006.  Despite the professional responsibility of providing humanitarian immigration protection to thousands of Cubans fleeing persecution, the diplomat and his wife found common ground with artists who included internationally known painters of contemporary art, formally untrained painters of naive art and artists who crafted their work for tourist consumption on Havana's streets. The collection is unique in that it reflects over two years of interaction between the artists and Americans living and working in Cuba.   The exhibition ran Aug. 31, 2007-Sept. 28, 2007.

one island two cultures

“One Island, Two Cultures” is an examination of the diverse artistic and cultural traditions of two nations living on the same island. The majority of the art on display in the exhibition is drawn from Oak Hall School families who have graciously agreed to allow us to share their art collections with the Gainesville community.

The opening event will include a performance by Haitian folk dancers and food from both cultures. Dr. Gerald Murray from the University of Florida department of Anthropology will give an opening gallery talk.

We hope you can join us for this special celebration of the art and culture of these two nations on Friday, Feb. 27, 2009 at 7:00 p.m.
