Ways to Give

Endowments

Endowments are forever. That’s what makes them so powerful. Endowments are unending funding streams that guarantee timeless support for what’s important to the donor. Each year, 4-6 percent of the endowment goes directly to programs and activities designated by donors. That conservative withdrawal means the endowment will never disappear; it will continue feeding OHS and the donor’s legacy for generations to come. Endowments enable the school to look to the future with confidence that it will always have resources to discover and explore, to share knowledge, and to serve communities and families. Because of that, the value of an endowment is far more than the initial gift. The funds it generates are endless.

Leadership Gifts & Pledged Gifts

Every project needs a leader. Philanthropic success often centers on a leader who steps forward to financially advance a priority. The gift is both impactful and inspirational to the community. Leadership gifts are often called anchor gifts because of their ability to “anchor” a project. They are often a one-time cash gift. Some projects and priorities may also benefit greatly from a reoccurring gift to help build consistency in advancing an area. Often set for a specific period, the gift is made annually, bi-annually, or quarterly for a specific purpose. These gifts do not yield interest and are cash gifts. Often most impactful for Capital Project and Annual Fund efforts.

Planned Giving

Tomorrow’s leaders, scholars, athletes, and artists begin their journey at OHS. It is your support that paves the way for their success. When you include OHS in your estate plans, you not only invest in these future Eagles, you ensure your legacy lives on in the programs, projects, and initiatives they create.

Gift in Your Will or Trusts:

You want to leave money to OHS in your will. You also want the flexibility to change your will if life circumstances change. You can do both. In as little as one sentence, you can complete your gift. This type of donation to OHS in your will or living trust helps ensure that we continue our mission for years to come.

  • Continued ownership and use of all assets
  • Flexibility to change your plans

Retirement Plan Assets:

Retirement plan assets are a great way to support OHS because they not only help support the mission, but they also can provide tax relief for your loved ones.

  • Tax-free lifetime gifts for donors of age 72 or older
  • Avoid leaving your heirs a taxable gift later

Life Insurance Policy:

When the original purpose for a life insurance policy no longer applies — such as educating children now grown or providing financial security for a spouse — your policy can become a powerful and simple way to support our work.

  • Current and possibly future tax deductions

Additional Planned Giving Includes:

  • Life Income Gift
  • Life Insurance
  • IRA Charitable Rollover
  • Retirement Plan Assets
  • Charitable Lead Trusts
  • Donor Advised Funds

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does OHS ask for contributions in addition to tuition?

The cost of independent school education is such that tuition and fees do not cover the total cost of educating each student. As is the case with many other independent schools, our development efforts are designed to solicit charitable gifts in order to bridge the gap between income and the actual cost of operating the school.

Why doesn't the school charge enough to cover operating costs?

If tuition increased to cover the actual cost of programs, many families could not afford to send their families to Oak Hall. This could mean a drop in enrollment, resulting in a cutback of our programs and steeper tuition increases in order to fund all operations, which would adversely affect your child’s education. Additionally, charitable gifts would be even more difficult to obtain given the increased cost of sending a child to school. This would preclude our ability to finance many of the important campus programs and improvements made possible by charitable support.

Is giving to an annual fund unique to our school?

No. Independent schools have long relied on the generosity and loyalty of their constituencies to advance their institutions. Very few, if any, private, independent schools, colleges, or universities meet their financial obligations with tuition alone.

How does a gift to the Annual Fund help Oak Hall?

The Annual Fund helps across all areas of the campus and the full student experience.

Areas of impact include:

  1. Greatest Needs: Greatest Needs gifts support every student and faculty member by giving the school flexibility to meet needs as they arise and to fully fund our priorities.
  2. Academic Programs: Oak Hall is committed to providing high-quality, challenging academic experiences to prepare each student for a successful future. This fund supports curriculum needs, materials, guest speakers, and tools in the classroom that bring the subject matter to life for our students.
  3. Faculty Professional Development: Increases opportunities for our faculty to engage in professional growth and development, which is crucial to retaining our great faculty and attracting dynamic new faculty members. Our students benefit most from an energized faculty who have a regular opportunity to grow and learn.
  4. Technology and Classroom Tools: From 3D printers to iMacs and iPads, lab equipment like spectrometers and genetic kits, this fund supports our students’ daily learning environments and better prepares them for the future.
  5. Capital and Infrastructure Improvements: Creating environments that enhance student learning is critical. Gifts to the annual fund help update classrooms, academic, art, and athletic facilities, as well as outdoor and indoor community spaces.
