What's New with the Arts?
Mr. Ponzio's Global Art 7 has studied the history and science of blacksmithing, the Iron Age, and how blacksmithing was at the root of technological development worldwide. Our students took to the anvil to bend and shape iron into decorative and strong hooks! They realized that blacksmithing doesn't require brute strength, rather it requires having the vision and creativity to shape this metal in any manner they see fit.
On Friday, Feb. 1, artist Emmett Williams discussed his paintings, influences, and artistic process with students in Mr. Ponzio's Art 1 class. The exhibition is being held in celebration of Black History Month and can be viewed through February 28, 2019. Be sure to stop by the Cofrin Gallery to view Mr. Williams’ beautiful artwork.
We had a wonderful reception for Emmett Williams, artist of Street Face: An Urban Experience. Last Friday, attendees enjoyed food, live music, and beautiful artwork. The exhibit will be up until the end of February. Be sure to stop by the Cofrin Gallery to check it out before then.
OHS 2nd Grade Musical
Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears
Our musical was based on a West African pourquoi, or why story, providing a fanciful explanation for a common occurrence; in this case, why mosquitoes buzz around our ears! Our rendition of the story is told through narration, dialogue, and songs featuring both piano and Orff instrument accompaniment. Keep an eye out for more pictures and a video of the performance to be posted here soon!
OHS Sister City in Haiti
Oak Hall Art classes were visited by a delegation of artists from Gainesville's official Sister City, Jacmel Haiti. The artists visited Gainesville in celebration of Haiti Week. While visiting, these artists have been exhibiting and creating art, as well as putting on dance and musical performances all week. On December 6, they spent the afternoon creating art, discussing Haitian history & culture, and making music with Oak Hall students. It was a great afternoon and a fascinating cultural exchange!

FMEA All-State Conference
We would like to congratulate our seven Middle and Upper School students who will be travelling to Tampa this January for the Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA) All-State Conference.
This opportunity is earned through an audition process where only the top student musicians from the State of Florida are accepted to participate in three days of rigorous rehearsals culminating in a performance at the Tampa Conference Center or the Straz Performing Arts Center. It truly is an honor to be a part of one of these ensembles.
Four of our student musicians were accepted into the All-State performance ensembles:
Jamie R.W.: Middle School All-State Orchestra – Violin
Simona G.: All-State Middle School Band - Clarinet
Sofia G.: High School Honors Orchestra - Violin
Anya A.: All-State Concert Chorus - Voice
For the first time, we have three Upper School students accepted into the new All-State Experience Program where students observe and interact with renowned conductors and music departments from across the country. These three students are:
Congratulations to our young student musicians! Best of luck in Tampa!
