What's New with the Arts?

OHS Sister City in Haiti

Oak Hall Art classes were visited by a delegation of artists from Gainesville's official Sister City, Jacmel Haiti. The artists visited Gainesville this week in celebration of Haiti Week. While visiting, these artists have been exhibiting and creating art, as well as putting on dance and musical performances all week. On December 6, they spent the afternoon creating art, discussing Haitian history & culture, and making music with Oak Hall students. It was a great afternoon and a fascinating cultural exchange!

More information about Gainesville's Sister City relationship with Jacmel, Haiti can be found at HERE & HERE.

OHS 2nd Grade Musical

Why Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears

Our musical was based on a West African pourquoi, or why story, providing a fanciful explanation for a common occurrence; in this case, why mosquitoes buzz around our ears! Our rendition of the story is told through narration, dialogue, and songs featuring both piano and Orff instrument accompaniment. Keep an eye out for more pictures and a video of the performance to be posted here soon!

This performance will feature our Middle and Upper School musicians playing music by Maroon 5, Christopher Tin, Baba Yetu, Eric Whitacre, Beatles, Earth, Wind & Fire, Gaelic Storm, Sarah Vaughan, U2, and more!

We look forward to seeing you there!

FMEA All-State Conference

We would like to congratulate our seven Middle and Upper School students who will be travelling to Tampa this January for the Florida Music Educators Association (FMEA) All-State Conference.

This opportunity is earned through an audition process where only the top student musicians from the State of Florida are accepted to participate in three days of rigorous rehearsals culminating in a performance at the Tampa Conference Center or the Straz Performing Arts Center. It truly is an honor to be a part of one of these ensembles.

Four of our student musicians were accepted into the All-State performance ensembles:

Jamie R.W.: Middle School All-State Orchestra – Violin
Simona G.: All-State Middle School Band - Clarinet
Sofia G.: High School Honors Orchestra - Violin
Anya A.: All-State Concert Chorus - Voice

For the first time, we have three Upper School students accepted into the new All-State Experience Program where students observe and interact with renowned conductors and music departments from across the country. These three students are:

Sean C.
Griffin W.
Anthony P.

Congratulations to our young student musicians! Best of luck in Tampa!
